Peter Anthony Monk was born in Hetton-le-Hole, Co. Durham, England. He studied composition with Henri Pousseur at the Centre de Recherches Musicales de Wallonie, Liège, Belgium and had consultation lessons with Ligeti and Globokar in Hamburg and Köln. He gained a Premier Prix from the Conservatoire Royal de Musique, Liège where he also taught musical improvisation. During that time he worked as music adviser for Belgian Television [BRT].

Subsequently he read for a Master’s Degree in Music at King’s College London and studied film music with Don Ray of MTM Studios, Hollywood.

His compositions have been performed widely in Europe, the USA and Japan. Broadcasts include:

  • RAI
  • Belgian Radio 3
  • Hilversum

He has been Guest Composer of the Verona Brass Festival, Composer-in-Residence for Eurobrass and a member of the jury for the ‘Due Agosto’ Competition for Orchestral Composition in Bologna.

Recently, Peter has been composing for a 2300 year old Celtic instrument called the Karnyx, fragments of which were discovered by an Italian archaeologist in N. Italy, A reconstruction has been completed from brass and another in the original bronze is underway.

In 2015 Peter will be Composer-in-Residence for the International Trumpet Symposium, Trentino.

Most of my pieces were commissioned and written for professional musicians from several different countries with funds made available by the Arts Council of Great Britain, Eastern Arts, South Eastern Arts as well as by private individuals.

Any celebratory or tribute piece may be used in other circumstances.
